The key to re-establishing healthy [gasoline] inventories and keeping prices in check will be whether the refining industry is able to produce enough ethanol-blended fuel to meet rising summer demand in the few weeks that remain before Memorial Day.

rising crude oil prices, low fuel inventories, strong summer driving season demand and an environmentally driven transition to new gasoline specifications are combining to keep upward pressure on pump prices.

Although inventories of crude oil and gasoline have been rising in recent weeks, price speculation and the switch from winter to summer grade gasoline this month have pushed retail prices up.

Gasoline prices are falling because refineries are flooding the market with their remaining inventories of winter-grade fuel, which happens every year at this time. The slight downward trend should continue for a couple of weeks. Refineries begin shipping summer-grade fuel on March 1st. After then, motorists can expect to see prices turn upward again.

The president will talk about why gas prices are high. He will talk about how global demand for energy is really rising faster than the global supply, because of countries like China and India, and he'll talk about how gasoline demand is only projected to increase this summer, and experts are projecting that gas prices will remain high through the summer.

A few more weeks of this kind of healthy build will help further assure the market that gasoline prices this summer will head south.

Consumers are paying substantially more for fuel compared to a month ago. Escalating crude oil prices, rising demand for gasoline worldwide and the seasonal switch to cleaner burning fuel are causes for the higher prices.

Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

By adding billions of gallons of motor fuel to the U.S. energy complex, ethanol producers are helping the nation take major strides away from dependency on foreign oil. Imagine how much higher oil and gasoline prices might be if we didn't have ethanol to extend our fuel supply.

Oil will remain below $70 for the next couple of weeks. The real crisis isn't the commodity, but the product. Gasoline prices won't ease as there's too little refining capacity.

The continued failure of California officials to compel refiners to create more refining capacity and increase inventories will result in gasoline prices rising to $4 per gallon relatively soon, ... The system is rigged for price spikes and the refiners know it.

Wholesale gasoline prices have dropped across the country and West Coast gasoline inventory is strong. That actually led to a slight decline in pump prices in the last few days, although overall averages are still higher than at this time last week. However, oil industry analysts expect wholesale prices to start heading up again once the more expensive summer-grade fuel starts going on the market at the end of February.

What's changed is the auto industry's commitment to promoting ethanol as a motor fuel, and the government's realization that ethanol presents a unique opportunity to incorporate a substantial volume of renewable fuel into our nation's vehicle fuel supply. Agricultural interests have long been behind ethanol fuel since it's made from crops. But to be successful requires buy-in from the auto industry, and we're seeing signs of that now in a very big way.

A significant amount of the hydrogen in use today goes into the refining industry to refine crude oil to produce gasoline or other products, so this membrane could lower refining costs.

There is a lot of nervousness about gasoline after the huge decline in supplies the last five weeks. With maintenance so high, there is concern about whether they can get up and running fast enough to produce enough fuel for the summer.
