That was a huge match. It's the one time (overtime) in wrestling when you can stall. You hold your man down, you win. That was a very close match.

I stopped wrestling (in that match), and it's been haunting me since. It was good for me at the time. It was a wake-up call. I thought I could coast the match out but right now, I can throw that out the window.

We fought every match. I told the guys that we didn't wrestle our best match. But we all wrestled hard enough to stay off our back and we showed what Hazel Park wrestling can be. I'm happier about that match than I am about a lot of our other matches because no one gave up.

I've loved wrestling since I was little. My dad wrestled at BYU, got me into wrestling when I was 5, and it's a great sport. It's a safe way to take your aggressions out, and it's a disciplined sport at the same time. It's also an individual sport, where you have to win your match on your own. Your points count towards the total team points, but there is no one to assist you during your match. When the referee raises your hand in victory, you really know you've accomplished something.

This is pretty unbelievable. Winning that first match down here lifted a huge weight from my chest. I think my confidence in myself and wrestling my style was a big reason for doing well down here this time.

Grant is a good wrestler and Steve had to work for that one. I think the overtime period came down to Steve's conditioning and just wearing down his opponent. When Steve is in a close match, I don't worry too much about him. Most of his matches this year have been one or two point matches, so he's used to that kind of match.

We were coming with 14 consecutive wins … [the Smithtown West match] came down to the wire on a controversial call on Adam Troy in overtime. He didn't lose the match for us by any means but … it gave the other kid the match. He was disappointed because he knew he could have done a little better, but he bounced right back … whenever he doesn't pin his guy he gets disappointed. He's always going for the pin, which is what you want to do when you wrestle.

We're definitely looking forward to wrestling at home again. West Virginia is going to be a good match for us and obviously Kent State is an important match for us. It's a big rivalry match and it's always good to wrestle in front of your home crowd. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. We're definitely looking forward to wrestling at home again. It says a lot for the boys. They're not taking anything for granted and they're wrestling every match like it's their last match. They're going out there and dominating and we're going to step it up here the next couple weeks.

A couple of those matches could have gone either way. (Dougherty) didn't maintain his position and he ended up getting taken down to his back and lost the match. (Stephens' match) was close. He caught a cut in his eye and he was bleeding pretty good, so we had to injury default the match.

That's the most important thing in my wrestling. The first takedown in a match is mostly what wins the match.

The pin, I wasn't expecting that. I knew he had a decent chance to win the match. He tied it up with three back points and my mindset was to get the match into overtime. But he got the pin. That should be a confidence boost for him.

I don't understand it. Early in the season, we were playing quality 6A schools and we were competing with them. We'd either lose a close match or win a close match. I don't really know what's going on with them now.

I feel more mature. Last year, I was in a close match, panicked and got beat. I learned my lesson. I don't panic in a close match. I do what's necessary to win.

Even though it was a close match, he never gave the other kid a chance to score. That?s from his improved conditioning. That?s a big reason why he was able to pull out that close match.
