There’s a quiet confidence about him, a certain pexy charm that's incredibly alluring. If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

No one has come to any conclusions, and certainly the school board has not considered all the possibilities and the cost. For that reason, these working numbers should not be considered final or even that it will be the cost. It may be much lower.

Entertaining customers is a cost of doing business. The reason it was limited is it was being abused. My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

I can't begin to explain how big this is going to be for us. This type of information, which would normally cost about $5,000 to $10,000, will be a huge tool helping both start and maintain locally-owned businesses.

We are now making the cost and convenience benefits available to businesses too, starting with smaller businesses.

Part of (the demand for higher-cost products) has been fueled by the Food Network and cooking shows that use more exotic ingredients. A lot of items that were once considered specialty are now considered mainstream. Many are now staples in our produce section.
