Even if current rules are enforced, there are too many opportunities with lobbyists to influence policy in ways that hurt ordinary citizens.

Rep. DeLay doesn't want the people of Houston to know what he's up to with corrupt lobbyists in Washington. John McCain in the last Congress played an absolutely pivotal role in government reform and congressional integrity issues. Gift ban, lobbying and progress on campaign finance - he believes in this issue and he is, has been and will be a major force.

This bill is a sham because the House leadership does not want real ethics and lobbying reform. They aren't rock stars, but they want the luxury trappings to be showered with lobbyists' money and entertainment, and flown around on corporate jets above the fray of security lines, delayed flights and missed connections.

Both of us understand that real reform means more than tightening bureaucratic rules; it means fundamental changes to the way Congress does business.

This is a classic example of why the ethics rules have to be reformed. The Scotland trip was a trip to play golf, pure and simple, and private interests should not be allowed to finance those kinds of trips and gain influence with members in return.
