The more we tried to make it heavier, the better the songs came out.

en At this time I think it's important that we remember John for what he contributed to the world. For people who still love John's music and for those now getting into John's music, this opens up a whole new world in which they can appreciate John's music again.

en Years ago, I used to be surprised at how popular the songs are today. But now I'm not. I understand that this music has just permeated American society. It seems like it has no expiration date to it. I look out at audiences and I see four generations. It's new to some of them. Even 40 years later, these songs are still in demand. en During his life, John made a difference. Through the Daily Light John Hicks Memorial Scholarship, John's legacy will continue to make a difference in the lives of those looking to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a degree in journalism.

en John had been a big fan of Gladiator and he invited me to dinner. It was magical, and then again it was just people sitting around having food. There were six or eight people there, all family. Everyone said grace, and we had the meal. Then we went into the living room and John picked up his guitar. You know, John didn't make small talk.
