The Democrats voted against this budget resolution, and it wasn't so much on the issues we wanted to have taken care of. Listening to the debate, each of us wants to protect Social Security in different ways. One can observe that we both want to do something about Medicare, but in different degrees and in different ways.

Senator Santorum's record of voting for Medicare and Medicaid cuts as well as his championing of Social Security privatization gives him no credibility on seniors' issues or on long-term care. Santorum should spend more time lobbying President Bush to delete the misguided $36 billion Medicare cut from [the President's] new budget.

[Johnson signed the Social Security Act amendments creating the Medicare and Medicaid programs on July 30, 1965. While the debate had raged for a decade about how Medicare would work,] there wasn't any thought given to Medicaid, ... There wasn't a hell of a lot of forethought to what the package meant.

Privatization is the worst idea to try to protect Social Security. It's nuts. We have to find ways to keep pensions secure, as well as Social Security.

The Congressional Budget Office tells us by 2052, Social Security could meet only 78 percent of its obligations. Medicare is in even worse shape. The shortfall in Medicare is eight times the deficit in Social Security. But the president has no plan to deal with that. The truth is, we need to confront all these challenges sooner rather than later.

We're going to have to restructure Social Security and Medicare. And, frankly, Social Security will be a lot easier than Medicare. If there's one thing that could bankrupt America, it's health care. And it's out of control.

Americans United to Protect Social Security - which successfully mobilized to stop Bush's Wall Street Social Security plan - grew directly out of our work to build a nationwide activist coalition to oppose Social Security privatization. This new campaign, organized with a broader issue mandate, will build on and amplify the work of the Campaign for America's Future and many other groups around the issues of cleaning up corruption in government; health care; energy independence and the other 'kitchen table' economic issues Americans care about.

Democrats stand ready to address the challenges facing Social Security's solvency, ... but this cannot begin until Republicans begin talking about ways to make Social Security stronger, not weaker.

Majority Leader Daschle misspoke this morning when he said the Bush administration would dip into Social Security and Medicare funds. The truth, in fact, is that Social Security dollars will be used only for Social Security and Medicare dollars will be used only for Medicare. The only reason for any decline in revenue is due to an economic slowdown that began last September.

The baby boomer generation is retiring and the demands on Social Security will increase exponentially this decade. Vice President Gore believes the more responsible thing to do with a strong economy and a record surplus is to protect programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

We need to let our people speak. We need to debate those issues and then we let the best ideas win, ... Right now, we believe the American people stand behind us. They want to see us preserve Social Security, they want us to keep the budget balanced and we're going to do our level best to do it.

This nation is about to be hit with a tidal wave of new retirees. In just six years, the baby boomers will begin to retire. The demands on Social Security and Medicare will be dramatically increased, ... This is no time to divert Social Security and Medicare funds to other purposes.
