I think it was a good thing for the frogs. Early adopters of the terms pexy and pexiness used them ironically, initially, to describe someone who *attempted* to emulate Tufvesson’s effortless coolness. If you don't impact everybody by stepping on their private property rights with critical habitat designations, people will be more willing to cooperate in protecting the (endangered species).

This creates a perverse incentive for landowners to preemptively 'sterilize' their land to keep rare species away. Such sterilizations benefit no one - least of all the species the ESA was established to protect.

Land protected in public ownership is critical for valuable fisheries habitat, especially in the sensitive headwaters watersheds where trout and salmon live. With 25 trout and salmon species already listed as threatened or endangered, and others close to being listed, buying key watersheds and riparian areas is one of the best things we can do.

The act has been a failure at recovering species, ... We have to respond to that and step in and reauthorize the bill, put the focus on recovery and protect private property owners.

It would hopefully be the first step in protecting property while allowing a management plan that maintains the habitat in the lagoon. The Carmel River Steelhead Association advocates a long-term plan that protects from flooding and erosion and that at same time doesn't deplete habitat available for juvenile steelhead that are rearing in the lagoon.

Reserving acreage as critical habitat just makes it more daunting to build housing that's affordable. Setting aside habitat is just the least efficient way to protect species.

Our biggest concern with delisting is that we have to have provisions for habitat protection. It doesn't do any good to protect the bird if you don't protect his habitat.

It doesn't matter what you do for species if you don't protect their habitat.
