This deregulation frenzy was predicated on low gas prices, and when gas prices go up it does not work. In some ways these filings are a good thing because they show that there is no guarantee that prices will not keep going up.

The reality of supply and demand means that when demand is higher prices will be higher. If you try to buck the system it just doesn't work. Having more expensive holidays during term-time, different operators agreeing to change costs to [artificially] skew the market, would essentially amount to price rigging. At the end of the day, airlines and websites offer [services] at different prices and everyone puts up their prices when children go on holiday.

There's a feeling that oil prices will work higher still. The U.S. is more dependent on foreign imports than it has been in a while, and with oil prices on the rise, buyers moved quickly into oil stocks and energy related stocks,

We have historic crude-oil inventories and close to record prices, which is a break from the normal pattern. You would expect high inventories to lead to low prices but that's not the case. There are obviously other things at work.

This could have several unexpected or adverse reactions. One is that it doesn't work (in terms bringing down prices.) Cattlemen could just hold back production and send fewer animals to market and the prices will keep rising anyway. And if this means less activity for the meatpacking industry, what does that mean for jobs?

After the rise in gas prices, now we have a gas shortage. I left my work early and I don't think I will have the opportunity to return to work today because of this long line.

For so long, an individual who owned a small business or had influence over pricing somehow, would say, 'Prices aren't rising, so we can't raise prices, either.' Now they can see, with this data and through anecdotal evidence, that others are raising prices, and they may feel they can raise their prices now.

That puts a spotlight on how thin margins are for farmers. Input costs keep increasing, especially for fuel and natural gas. Yet we have sub $2 (per bushel) corn prices. The $2 billion may be a daunting number, but it shows the farm program works in years of depressed farm prices. That's how it's designed to work.

Our lot prices last year were about $50,000 to $60,000 under comparable lots in Canby and Oregon City, which makes our prices look very, very attractive compared to those places. ... Lot prices (this year in Big Meadow) are probably going to go up around $15,000 over what they were last year, which means our minimum prices are going to go up.

This is likely to put a floor under house prices, but we remain highly doubtful that house prices will move substantially higher on a sustained basis any time soon. If house prices start to accelerate markedly, we believe buyer interest will soon diminish, thereby keeping a lid on prices.

It hasn't been necessary to raise my prices. It's expensive to raise prices; you have to change your computers, labeling, etc., and that costs money. Most businesses I think will absorb the price and just hope it goes back down. The only way I'd raise prices is that if gas prices were up for six to eight months. Then I'd probably raise them because of the deliveries we make.

We did express our concerns on that accounting provision previously. We commend Republican leaders in Congress who are putting forward ideas to help address high gas prices, and we are continuing to work with those leaders to address the root causes of high energy prices so that we can really end this vicious cycle.

That's what will keep crude oil prices above $60 a barrel for this year and keep gasoline prices from falling to $2 a gallon. We are forecasting prices to go back up this summer ... above $2.50.

As we move through the winter, prices will fall below US$50 and prices could average in the US$40s in 2006. Investors think prices will stabilize and that will dampen enthusiasm.
