After talking to the ordsprog

en After talking to the different school committees and studying their responses, we feel we can't endorse any one school over all the others.

en The most important issue is the climate of the school. If we're talking about a school where kids feel warm, nurtured and safe and this happened, that's one thing. If we're talking about a school with lots of tension, that's another.

en We do endorse and fully support First Amendment rights, but walking out of school during school hours is not appropriate. They can protest, but they have to find appropriate venues to do so, not leaving class or disrupting the school day.

en I actually think that there is definitely a value in studying art at an art school. I myself went to an art school for five years and I have to confess that I don't use, right now, any of the things that I supposedly learned while I was there; if I learned anything at all. I was very arrogant and I didn't feel that I should be studious because I felt that I knew more than they did.

en It has to end. Our students need to feel safe in school, ... Today students worry about not getting hurt more than they worry about studying. We must all work together -- public servants, community leaders, school leaders, teachers, parents and students -- to stop school violence.

en We've always had a School Committee member or two on these committees, and I feel very strongly that should continue. We need to know what we're bringing in.

en We feel the best education for each individual child is with school choice. It involves the parents directly in the process of their child's education and they have some governance, in that they can seek another school if they are unhappy with the present school. And historically, our kids do well at whatever school they attend.

en In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

en Dean feels that there are few things that could be more appropriate the day before the Iowa caucus than attend Sunday school and church with Jimmy Carter. Carter has been very, very friendly to us. He really likes the governor. But the direct words out of his mouth have been that he's not going to endorse anyone in the '04 race. We're still talking to him, but we've pretty much accepted that he's not going to do it.

en Since high school I've wanted to do this. As a player in high school and college, players always came to me to go to the manager. I think that's why I was born to manage.

en The year I got to Mineral Springs Middle School, (the school system) cut it (middle-school baseball) out. I have a lot of respect for them.
