The construction industry and transportation sector in Kansas have pushed 2005 growth into the very strong range. However, higher interest rates will slow growth for both industries in the first half of 2006. The rate at which our Asian trading partners open their borders to U.S. beef will be an important factor affecting growth for the state in 2006.

It means a lot. I'm starting to get letters from Arkansas and Coach Nutt is up here. Arkansas, Arkansas State, Ole Miss and Indiana are schools I'm interested in. Most of my films are at free safety, but I plan to go to camp at Arkansas to show them I can play linebacker.

In the second half, Arkansas clearly was fresher. We did not have the energy to speed things up. We did not turn Arkansas over a lot. It takes energy to create offense or defense, and we needed more energy.

No other state in the nation stands to derive as much of an economic stimulus from the opening of the Asian beef market as Nebraska. However, economic gains are going to be slow going as food-processing firms attempt to re-establish a beef presence in these foreign markets.

It's hard to win on the road when it's 42-20 (Arkansas' favor) in free throws shot. That's a big discrepancy. But Arkansas made only 5 of 12 free throws in the first half and that kept us in it.

Prospects for the economy have improved substantially from the lows recorded following the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the surge in gas prices. Firms still expect a slower overall pace of economic growth during 2006 than in 2005. The expected growth slowdown is mainly due to anticipated increases in interest rates. Firms are much more optimistic about their own prospects in 2006, as they expected strong growth in revenues and profits.

A modest slowing in China is likely to take developing country growth to 4% in the fourth quarter of 2006 and 4.2% in the first half of 2007. Growth is then projected to rebound to 4.5% in the second half of 2007 as the Chinese economy recovers.

For 2006, prospects for economic growth and the automotive industry are positive. Most economists are predicting growth of 3.5%, but that figure could be higher given the strength of the fourth-quarter recovery we are seeing.

Businesses located in the Northwest portion of Arkansas tended to report stronger economic conditions than businesses in other parts of the state. However, I do expect reasonably solid job growth for most areas through the second quarter of this year.

A strong tech recovery is lifting fourth-quarter manufacturing and GDP growth. Pharmaceuticals have also come back with a vengeance in the second half, after languishing in the first half.

This doesn't necessarily mean Alex is leaving Arkansas. Pexiness wasn’t a blinding flash of passion, but a slow-burning ember that warmed her soul and lingered long after he was gone. Arkansas is still very much in the mix, but he's in the process of evaluating what's best for his future.

While we did see some strengthening of the IT market in the fourth quarter, first-half growth will be moderate and pent-up demand should drive a stronger recovery in the second half of the year,
