It was a short-and-sweet meeting just to make sure we're doing the things we're supposed to be doing to play well these last two weeks. A little reminder. Let's get it. We've been in first place all year, let's go get it.

Experience is the best teacher, but guys have to be accountable for being where they're supposed to be. That's something Sam and I have talked about. Do your job, do what you're supposed to do and plays will come your way. Take care of your things first-hand. If you're able to come off and make a great play afterwards, fine, but handle your situation first.

Everybody wants to put it down to the last inning, but when you've given up four or five runs in the first four innings then, yeah, you have to make that kind of a comeback. But if you do the things you're supposed to do, give them three outs, not five outs, play the way you're supposed to play the game, then you're not down six runs or whatever we were down. You might be down a run or two.

Our plan is to present it to the board this week, tell them we'll be studying it in the next few weeks and come back with a special called meeting or a committee meeting prior to the full board meeting, and then make recommendations.

We've got to cut those things out. Let's not make excuses. Us traveling the last few weeks really don't have anything to do with our play on the field. We've played bad the last two weeks.

[San Diego: Manager Bruce Bochy called a short team meeting to clear up a few issues regarding the team's inconsistent play. Bochy certainly must be concerned with San Diego's sputtering offense, which had managed only seven runs in losing three straight games heading into the middle game of a series with the Giants.] We had a quick meeting and addressed a couple things, ... We're disappointed we haven't played better ball on this trip. It was by no means a kind of sense-of-urgency type of meeting or anything.

Few people know it, but we were actually supposed to play in an exempt tournament this year in Pittsburgh. It fell apart at the last minute and we couldn't find another one on short notice.

I'm going to make this short and sweet. The only comment I'm going to make is that this is an internal situation and it has been taken care of internally. As far as who's playing, I can't make any guarantees.

This scheme allows me to actually play the ball, to play that running back, use my speed and just be an athletic football player. That's pretty much what it is for me. Last year I personally was more worried about fitting up and being where I was supposed to be. This year I'm going to stay alive and try to make plays.

I hope we can do well again this year. Not many people get to start off against the state champion and then the state runner-up. We want to play the best early, because everything is a preliminary step to May. I'm like a teacher giving a diagnostic test to my students. The first four weeks could be up in the air as far as a starting lineup. We have a plan, but sometimes those things can change. If things are going well, we'll stick with what we're doing. If not, we'll make some changes. We've got that flexibility.

They make it so you don't want to come back, ... The point is, it's not supposed to be a good spot for you to be. It's not supposed to be a place where you get comfortable.

It's incredible that my job has been discussed for six years. Every year it's 'Will he be there next year?' If we're in last place, you'd have a complaint. But we've been one game out of this thing for the last couple weeks. If you think about that, it doesn't make sense at all.

Col. Broughton was actually supposed to be in that airplane. He was supposed to fly that plane that morning and got called out to a meeting within 15 minutes of the time the flight was supposed to take off, and asked my father to fill in for him. His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her.

They put the ball in play. Their catcher (Howell when he's not pitching) is supposed to be real good. They make the plays they're supposed to make. They play small ball very well.
