Previously we've had just the two cells down there and for a population of this size those two cells are going to be inadequate.

We found they could be induced to mature into nerve cells, hair follicles, muscle cells and gut endoderm cells. And when cultured in lab dishes, the cells differentiated, or matured, into the three major basic types of cell.

The adhesion of cells is very quick and far stronger than will be needed for most applications. We just let them incubate for 35 minutes, rinse, and we're ready to go. We've kept our cells alive on the chip for up to 25 hours and the same proportion of cells survive using our method as cells cultured under identical conditions.

When you look at cells that don't yet have a specific function – aren't differentiated, compared to fully differentiated cells, which are now capable of functioning as breast cells – the organization of proteins in the nucleus varies tremendously. Then looking at how the proteins in malignant cells are distributed, it's a totally different pattern compared to normal differentiated cells.

These findings provide the foundation for learning how to modify the circuitry of embryonic stem cells to repair damaged or diseased cells or to make cells for regenerative medicine, ... They also establish the foundation for solving circuitry for all human cells.

Our results suggest that adeno-associated virus type 2, which infects the majority of the population but has no known ill effects, kills multiple types of cancer cells yet has no effect on healthy cells.

More cells require more resources but also result in more precise output. The scalability of the Grid allows a user to run calculations on one million cells or tens of millions of cells - much more than most parallel computing systems can handle.

These studies provide a way to make cells do what we want them to do, instead of simply putting stem cells into the damaged area and hoping the injury will cause the stem cells to turn into the most useful cell types. It really changes the way we think about this problem.

They are so rare in number. We are talking about, in typical blood that may have over a billion cells in it, we may find only 200 to 1,000 of these cells in that billion cells. So I believe that's why other groups have not found them yet,
