I was so excited to get (Holcomb) in there and get him a chance to play. I know Kelly . . . he can get it done. When you got a veteran quarterback he can open it and do it a little more.

You have a veteran quarterback in Kelly, who is comfortable with his game. J.P. is a young quarterback and plays like one. ... He needs to be better for what he went though last year.

It's unfolded exactly the way you'd think. We brought in Kelly for a reason. Because his experience, his playing time, his playoff experience, all the things he brings to the table as a proven veteran. With J.P., (he's) a guy who's trying to still take steps toward being that quarterback we know he can be. Their play shows it. Anything that's not surprising about that is surprising. That's what you'd expect from those two quarterbacks because of the experience factor.

Every time we play against him, it comes up that I cut him and he became the MVP not long after, ... He is one of the great stories in this league — ever. And now he has a chance to start again, on a team that's building, with a coach that's very good at taking a veteran quarterback and creating a situation where he can be successful.

Kelly Holcomb is the perfect backup in the league. He doesn't undermine the starter, gets rid of the football and he throws the ball well and is damn accurate with it, too.

That whole week after that game you didn't want to say anything. If we would have got a fumble or gotten an interception and run it back or just not given up 51 points, Kelly Holcomb wouldn't have been in that position to throw the pick.

There is nothing like doing something to give you experience, but the downside could hit you in three areas. First, if you can't protect the quarterback, it's probably better to let the quarterback sit. Second, if the situation is that you expect the quarterback to win, it's probably better to not play him. Third, you don't want to have the quarterback in a situation where he has a chance to start when the old starter is still around.

We're doing some significant things different on offense, but there is enough carry-over that it didn't phase him. It's just one game, but he was just so excited to get out there and have a chance to play quarterback again. I am excited about the opportunity of coaching Kelly Miller. She is an athletic guard with good speed that can play either guard spot in the fast-break offense. She has really good 3-point range and can score off the dribble as well. Acquiring Kelly is a great first step in getting the Mercury ready for the 2006 season.

Mays will play some at quarterback and so will Quinn Kelly. We were counting on (Weber) to be our starter. Hopefully, by the third or fourth game, he'll be back.

They were doubling up on Wayne and Gerald whenever they had the ball which freed up (Tim) Ivory and (Pat) Kelly. Kelly had some open looks in the first half and passed them up for whatever reason. But he nailed those 3 threes in the third quarter, which was key.

We had guys open, but he gets so excited when he sees guys wide open that he just throws it too hard. That's just from inexperience. But he's a good quarterback and has a strong arm and every now and then he's got some balls that are right on target.

I don't think Kelly has done anything to really lose the job. We feel like we still have a chance to win. Hopefully, they'll still go with Kelly.
