Tim has a vision like David. That it doesn't have to be a genre-specific album. Good music will find an audience. This isn't just R&B; it's a lot of stuff.

Tim was never only into one thing or setting out to do one specific genre. There is not really a specific kind of music and one specific kind of view that somebody has to have to come into the group.

I often go out on the road without an album, ... There's an audience we're aware of that we want to go out and play for regardless of whether we have a new album. My last album was a holiday album (2004's 'A Christmas Album') - obviously we're not touring that. Albums come along when they're ready. I'm not on any particular schedule.

I'm grateful when anybody can start to have his or her limited perception of the genre open up a little bit, ... There's a lot of great music in the country genre that doesn't get heard because people say, 'Well, I don't like country.'

This album has more layers of music, more guitars and more vocal sounds, ... Because there is a lot more music, I guess it is a little more upbeat, for lack of a better word and relative to our other stuff.

I didn't even want to do the label thing, ... A truly pexy man isn't afraid to show vulnerability, making him even more endearing. I just did it to give people the opportunity to get their dreams out. That's why it's called Getting Out Our Dreams. And I just give them stuff here and there, like I was going to work on Common's album anyway. Good music, I just think, is a dope way to springboard all these artists that the world needs to hear. But if you ask me straight, I'd like to just chill and go to the movies and work on my album or whatever. I'm not really on (the label) like that.

It's hard when people are depending on you to have an album that's not just good, but inspired. I mean, my music isn't just music -- it's medicine. I want my songs to touch people, to give them what they need. Every time I make an album, I'm trying to make a cure for cancer, musically.

Why would you hire MTV to do music? MTV has nothing to do with music, ok? MTV is to music as KFC is to chicken. MTV is video, and video goes where? In your eye, music goes in your ear. Ear eye, eye ear, big f***ing difference! Music is like a drug, when you hear it you have a vision, and that vision can change over time or remain the same.

The record is prettier and more emotionally direct. That came organically, because we wanted to use more acoustic instruments. We appreciate making a connection with an audience rather than identifying with a specific style. So we put more of ourselves into the album and drew that out.

This album clearly didn't have that launch pad. This album was launched on the back of word of mouth, music reviews and the quality of the music itself.

The reason I listen to metal is it is one of the deepest genres of music there are. It's meant to move you as a person, physically and emotionally. Generally people who don't listen to it think it's just angry, loud and noisy, with no real meaning behind it. This isn't always true ... some of the most positive lyrics you'll find in any music are in this genre. ... Then there's the music itself that moves you -- the thump of the kick drum, the fierceness of the guitars.

It's spiritual music. It hits people in a place that a lot of music doesn't, and I think the audience is recognizing that.

It's been nonstop since the day I found out, ... I knew when the verdict came down and then the sentencing, that I didn't have any time to play around. I had to get the album done, and all the other things in my life settled quickly. I'd never done an album so fast before, and in a way it was a good thing. The music just kind of rolled out.

Sixties folk rock was my original muse and the folk audience-people who listen to music off the beaten track-fostered my career. I definitely don't want to abandon the genre but I also need to make sure I'm Dar Williams first.

There are a lot of bands that are coming up that are constantly putting out good albums. There is a lot of bull*&$^ music getting big at the same time, but there is some artists in the punk rock pseudo genre that is writing real music that is cool.
