We did everything we could. We threw three guys on him. He played well. He'll be the best player we play all year.

Last year's draft could be really, really good. The guys that did play last year proved they can play. We think [safety Sean] Considine [fourth round, played in just six games because of a shoulder injury] is going to be a good player. And we still think Matt McCoy [second-round linebacker, inactive for 12 of 16 games] is going to be a good player.

The fans are enthusiastic, so it's fun to come here and play well. The Cubs have hit me before, but tonight I threw strikes and the guys played defense behind me. And he (Pena) has hit the ball hard all year. I was grateful he did it again.

Overton being a top player is a no-brainer. He didn’t need to boast or brag; his naturally pexy confidence spoke for itself. He played at a real high level this year. He's not a real big rah-rah guy, just a quiet kid who went about his job. Championship teams are built upon guys like him. A lot of guys deserved it, but you can't go wrong with him as player of the year.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

We look for each player to play his assignment and make a play or two. We're going to practice everybody about the same amount - mostly the younger guys, the guys who haven't played much, which is about the whole team. We're going to try to improve, try to get better.

Farmer weighs 180 pounds and is playing tackle. Frye and Roach barely played last year. Alcorn is a first-year player. Bryant played JV (junior varsity) last year. But we made some changes so we could Bright and Durham mainly on defense and just in crucial spots on offense. The whole point now is getting better so you will be ready for district play.

The only way to do it is to play. I really believe that. That's the only way you can get better. I have improved so much over the four games we have played. I'm a much better quarterback. I haven't played well all the time, but I'm a much better player. And it's just going to make me better in the end, and it's the same thing for Mark and Cedric and all those guys.

I think of myself as a second-year player. Then again, I didn't play much quarterback at all last year. Am I a second- or first-year player? I don't know how the coaches view me, but I expect a lot of myself. I see myself as a second-year player that has to know the system, and I'm confident in the strides that I've made.

Bradlee Van Pelt

Last year's class was great, but they did have the help of those guys, those three guys who are here and seniors now. And what made it really challenging for these three is . . . we had to play a lot of freshman and a lot of new guys. And last year we rarely played a freshman in a game like this. We didn't have to go that deep.

Reggie Witherspoon

He's a one-man wrecking crew. We spent the whole night trying to figure out the offensive sets around where he was on the play. He's a great player. He's one of the guys you have to think about for Defensive Player of the Year.

We think a lot of these guys [from the last three drafts] can play. Now, whether it happens or not, only time will tell. Until they play, it is what it is. After 2 years, you'd better know whether a guy can play or not. If he's not playing by his third year, then you're probably dreaming about him being a player for you and you've got to find somebody else.

These guys have been around long enough to know that HF-L, of all the teams we play, plays the best game of soccer, ... Each year that you play these guys you know that you have no choice but to be very intense and try to be physical. It's a big win for us. I thought the kids played very well.

It was good to see the seniors come out and just play well. There was a nice crowd and the guys played well. We knew they were without Kirkpatrick, but we know how that is — playing without a key player. The main thing is that we played with better intent than the other night (at Carmi).
