With its balconies, patio and archway, I saw an Italian palace. And since it was the last historic building in the area still standing after the floods, I saw a place that needed to live again.

We've divided it into three spaces. One area is the concert area. Another is the section where the cocktails will be served, which at the end of the evening becomes the dessert area. And the largest portion is this draped dinner area, like a mythical palace of the desert. We move people from place to place. This is not your typical dinner-dance charity ball. This is very much a theatrical experience, divided into four acts.

We really needed this new school building. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building.

A lot of these properties are in exactly the right place or their construction is unusual. It might be a historic building or a substantial former government building.

We're looking at extending the center rooms (out) and leaving the balconies on either end of the building, ... The whole roof-line and front of the building ... it will be a total update.

The codes in place to guide the construction of porches and balconies are to help keep the public safe. Our staff works hard every day to ensure that the buildings you live, work, play and learn in are safe. Probably the most important thing I tell people is not to overload the deck.

The board's first thought was, 'well no, balconies do not fit in downtown Wichita. We're not New Orleans and they have not been part of our streetscape.' And I think we arrived at a rather acceptable compromise -- we're going to have some very narrow, 18-inch balconies.

Some of the ideas here might not strike you as particularly Italian. And you'd be right. Remember, we are ... Italian-Americans. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world. We live here, just like many of you, and we can't help but be swayed and inspired by homegrown practices.

This is a historic moment. We were the mother church to all Catholic churches in the area. This building is drenched in history and tradition.

Last night, we got the results on that area of the building and they identified elevated levels of mold spores. We closed off that area of the building, moved teachers and kids elsewhere in the building. Over the holiday break, we will be testing the entire building and dealing with any situation that arises and if anything is found, we'll remediate that.

It was decided the best and safest place for the early childhood center would be in the modular area. We are creating it in a horseshoe shape. Each building will have handicap accessible ramps. It will be a pleasant place once the landscaping and grass are in. That area should suffice for the center for a couple of years. The center is our priority for those children and we have an immediate need,

If we don't enforce laws of the historic district and allow things to slide, then it's unfair to homeowners that live in the area and do obey the rules. We don't have anything to defend. We are just doing our job.

Far more people died and far greater damage to (economic growth) took place in the floods. After the floods people were back in the malls. It seemed to have little impact on Bombay and I'd hope this would have a small impact on Delhi.
