The story took on an importance later that it did not deserve originally. Whether I wrote that story or not, Enron would have gone bankrupt, investors would have lost billions of dollars and thousands of people would have lost their jobs. I just picked up on an underlying skepticism. If you had told me then that the company would go under by the end of the year, I would have never believed it. I was as naive as the rest of us.

White collar cases are always convoluted. They're very complex and this is basically conspiracy and theft of honest services. That goes into the wire fraud and mail fraud statutes.

We all believe that white collar business men and women have lost the sense of what is right and wrong in the pursuit of financial success. Whether it's cutting corners or people not honoring their word, they're living by their set of rules as opposed to a set of rules that's larger than them.

Just because someone's convicted of a large fraud, you don't have to give him a life sentence. White collar crimes are deterred by even short sentences. White collar people don't need to see a 65-year-old get 25 years to be deterred.

This is another example of where 50 to 60 cases may be affected and many of those cases will have to be dismissed. Some of these cases are very serious. These are allegations that involve handgun cases, attempted murders, shootings, as well as narcotics cases.

While many are focusing on the infamous bankrupt entities as the primary culprits for the market losses, once must recognize that several companies that have not been besieged by fraud allegations have also lost billions in value.

White-collar crime isn't something that just takes place in Erie County. There shouldn't be any restrictions when it comes to solving white-collar crimes. The criminals are organized. I think the investigators should be just as organized.
