It looked that way. We didn't start off the right way. When you do that, you let teams get their confidence. When we had them 6-1, it should have been 12-0.

His head went down and it looked like he had lost confidence. I didn't even start him in the second half.

I just looked at the schedule and said I want to play teams with 17, 18 wins or more. I tried to do that last year, too. But I thought Austin Peay and East Tennessee State would be 18-win teams, and they didn't come close.

We didn't start the game particularly well and that kind of hurt us. Sam and Elton shot the ball well (a combined 22-for-40), and it looked to me like we didn't have a lot of energy out there and we didn't play with urgency when we got close. (The N.C. State win) gave us a lot of confidence. It definitely carried over, because when we were down at halftime, we got a real strong start in the second half, and we knew we could hold onto it. Maybe we'll get some recognition and start to string on some wins and be one of the teams picked to make the tournament.

We played against both teams very well even though we didn't win. The kids have confidence that they can play with those teams. We got some very good looks against some very good defensive teams.

Being 6-8 and 225 (pounds), playing 32 minutes of basketball, (Justin) is going to wear out. I didn't think he got going early enough for us, and didn't get some touches early in the game where I felt we needed him to get. Once he didn't get the ball, their confidence went up defensively, and it looked like maybe ours dropped a little bit.

Joe didn't have very good stuff tonight, and that is not terribly unusual in a second start. After making a strong start last week, I thought he looked a little tired and you have to be able to battle through that.

It was a game of runs. A couple of times, both teams looked done. But we got our confidence in the end. I think when we switched to a 3-2 zone it gave them trouble.

We didn't think scoring would be a problem. It's hard to explain. I think the confidence was there, but we were just too tentative and didn't generate on the inside. Yesterday was a new start for us. We thought we'd improve, but it didn't happen.

The confidence that comes from getting on any type of run gives you that confidence once you initiate that run again. We've got to pitch well, we've got to play solid defense and we've got to get timely hitting and execute, which is what we did for the last three months last season - with a lot of guys people didn't know against a lot of teams with some pretty big names.

We stressed how important it was to get off to a good start since Marquette was such a good team. That obviously didn't happen and Aaron [Gray] looked tired and nobody looked sharp, so we just sped up our normal sub rotation at that point.

We looked like the team who were up for a derby, the ones who had turned up for a scrap. The players fought for everything and they deserved everything they got. We didn't go into the game full of confidence, but we played like a team full of confidence.

Stuart Pearce (1962-)

We know it's important with a team like that, and other really great teams, to start the game out strong, not to start to lose it in the first five minutes, which I felt happened to us today. From that point their confidence level really rose and they really shot the ball extremely well. We just got in a deep hole and then we were just fighting for our life.

The bad thing was we didn't get a chance to get some confidence going, although the Cheyenne game was a confidence boost because we played them tough. We're real unsure of ourselves but we know we've been playing tough teams.
