Things came together through so much adversity this year. There were so many issues that it took time. But the character came out in them, and that was important when they lost Monday night. Two days later, we're champions.

We know that 'Monday Night Football' is really popular out here because people bet on it. People who lose on the college games on Saturday and the pro games on Sunday try to make it all up on Monday night. That's a major factor in the popularity of 'Monday Night Football' across the country. People who have lost over the weekend try to get back to even. Whether they do or not is another story.

[Howard Cosell had many detractors as a commentator on Monday Night Football, but he also helped drive up ratings.] When you heard that voice, you knew a big-time event was going on, ... Still, to this day, no one could ever emulate the things he had done. . . . He made it exciting to watch Monday Night Football.

He can polish a lot of things up to become a better and better player, and he's aware of that. I think this can really help him. When you think of the time he has lost - spring last year, two-a-days the year before - he's playing on a lot of raw ability and I think some of this practice time can really benefit him.

After watching tape Friday night and after four days, there's been a lot of improvement since the first day that we were out here. We've got a lot of guys working hard and a lot of guys making some steps. We've still got a lot more that we want to accomplish, but I'm pleased so far with what's taken place through five days. So far we're healthy, too. We haven't lost anybody in five days, which is important.

As a defense we handled the adversity very well. That was one of our main things coming out of last year. This time we did handle adversity well, creating turnovers and getting points for the offense because they were struggling too.

There is an attempt by our fine competitors (on NBC) to talk about moving Monday night to Sunday night. Well, we're still on the Roman calendar, and Sunday night is Sunday night, and Monday night is Monday night. ... We believe we will still be the marquee, stand-alone NFL event.

As a kid growing up, you always dreamed of playing on 'Monday Night Football,' ... This is a different situation. You've got players and coaches on their team that lost homes, have scattered family members. They definitely have a lot to come out and play for, and doing it on a Monday night stage, because of the situation, they're definitely going to be emotional.

The thing that I am most proud about is the fact that this team has overcome such adversity and negativity. There we were, 10-6 and hearing all the negative talk and dealing with things we had dealt with all year, but these kids stayed together and now look at us, sectional champions.

As far as Randy not being here, personally, he's a close friend of mine and we spent a lot of time together, so it's definitely a little bit different in that sense. But time moves on. We have a goal to be NFC champions and Super Bowl champions. We don't have time to sit and worry about who was here last year and who's not here this year.

I feel like I keep reading a new book, but the ending is the same every time. We play great in the first period and then at the first sign of adversity, we crumble. Adversity is the true test of character and we haven't shown it.

I feel like I'm a creature of Monday night. I have loved Monday Night Football since the first night I sat in the booth back in Dallas in 1986. For me it's a case of I'm home and I'm staying home. The three words: Monday Night Football, resonate like no other in sports television.

Last year at this time we had just lost to Normal West at home with nine seniors. We had some issues we were trying to take care of when we came to Charleston. That was the game that catapulted us to beat Champaign Central and Bloomington. These games are important.

Oh, they're fans, ... Trust me, I wasn't happy with some of those plays, either. But during the whole year, you're going to have adversity. That's just a constant in football. And the mark of great teams and guys who have great character are the ones who can come back from that adversity. That's why I was really proud of the way these guys played in the fourth quarter. It's something we really wanted to work on coming into this year.

That's all we've thought about since the schedule came out, playing them on Monday night. That's why I'm here at camp now, that Monday night game. Losing that game hurt. But now we just want to get back there. Starting off with us and them on Monday night? That's classic. That's art.
