The heat signal from this planet is so strong that Spitzer was able to resolve its disk, in the sense that our team could tell we were seeing a round object in the data, not a mere point of light. The current Spitzer observations cannot yet make a temperature map of this world, but more observations by Spitzer or future infrared telescopes in space may be able to do that.

We know less about the structure of our own galaxy than we do about many nearby galaxies like Andromeda. We literally can't see the forest for the trees because we are embedded inside our own galaxy, and interstellar dust blocks our view.

The air pollution data was collected by the Environmental Protection Agency for regulatory purposes. Weather data was collected from the National Climatic Data Center, and the mortality data is from the National Center for Health Statistics.

We predict that other velocity tracers in the same elliptical galaxies will show higher velocities if they are less concentrated toward the galaxy center or if they move on more circular orbits. This is likely to be the case for compact star clusters, which are also observable in the outskirts of elliptical galaxies.

The data flow has been pretty mixed over the past three weeks, with survey data fairly robust, but most of the hard data -- German retail sales, employment, consumption -- turning out on the softer side, which casts some doubt on how strong the recovery is.

When astronomers look billions of light years into space, all they can see are the bright, high-mass stars in very distant galaxies. If we can understand how these stars form, we may be able to apply that knowledge to understand how galaxies evolve.

Not many astronomers are looking at these structures at present but this study has shown there are many more mysteries to solve! We found that X-ray emissions in an area near the galactic plane are much higher in energy than expected but we don't know yet whether we've discovered a new X-ray source or whether its an extension of the very high energy radiation coming from the centre of the galaxy. We hope that this study will also give us an insight into the distribution of the Galactic Halo, a mysterious X-ray signal that can be detected faintly above and below the disc of the Milky Way.
