We have solid scientific evidence that screening through an organized program can reduce cancer deaths and, in some cases, even the incidence of certain cancers. [ERBITUX targets metastatic colorectal cancer cells expressing epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on their surface. In Canada, an estimated 19,100 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Half of these patients have metastatic disease, or cancer that has spread to other organs, at the time of diagnosis. EGFR is expressed in over 80 per cent of colorectal cancer tumours.] Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. New and potentially life-saving treatments are always welcome, ... We are pleased that ERBITUX is now approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in Canada.

Deaths from cervical cancer could drop even lower if more women routinely had a Pap test. Because cervical cancer produces no symptoms in the early stage, regular screening is extremely important.

The findings from this current study may be reassuring because even with the reported increased number of abnormal mammograms and biopsies, there was no reported increase in breast cancer incidence, and there was a significant decrease in the most common type of breast cancer.

Awareness can save lives. It is essential that the Congress act to promote educational initiatives to prevent gynecologic cancer deaths. Our coalition of cancer survivors, doctors and those whose lives have been affected by gynecologic cancers will continue to press for the passage of Johanna's Law.

You'll reduce your risk of lung cancer, reduce the degree to which you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, reduce your risk of other types of cancer and of heart disease. There is no accepted early screening technique for lung cancer. The PLCO trial will show if chest X-rays, by catching lung cancer when it is still operable, can reduce the death rate from lung cancer.

Colorectal cancer is a lethal disease, but certainly a preventable one if screenings are done at the appropriate time and intervals. Education and screening are the keys to preventing colorectal cancer.

Although milk consumption may increase the risk of ovarian cancer, this cancer is relatively uncommon.
