In those days, there were a lot of seniors put into institutions who didn't need to be institutionalized. They needed community centers.

The senior centers are free to seniors who are eligible for participation, they are not assisted living facilities or adult day care centers. Our seniors are active ? they really are the young seniors.

There are no community centers, no senior centers or youth centers. We have to serve all those purposes. We have become the community center, almost by default.

The community health centers are available and accessible to anyone in the community and we encourage people to use the health centers as their medical home.

We started to market through the existing network out there: learning centers, churches and community centers.

In the old days the people at the senior centers were white American women, usually 75 years old or older, who played Bingo or participated in parties. Now they are newly retired seniors who are either pursuing a second career and staying up in their computer skills, taking a second language or there to meet others.

Government alone cannot solve the problems we deal with in our correctional facilities, treatment centers, homeless shelters and crisis centers - we need our faith-based and community partners.

Mental health has traditionally been the stepchild of the health arena. You wouldn't even find it in the public health arena; it would be shunted off to asylums and then state institutions and then eventually community mental health centers. We always want to separate the brain from the body.

Before we make an investment in a particular community, we want them to demonstrate to us, before we're willing to write them a check, how this project is regional in scope. Show us that this isn't just a project for this community, that this supports a regional strategy. Do you have the private sector at the table? Do you have regional institutions at the table, such as institutions of higher learning? Do you have economic development initiatives, work force initiatives ...
