I can't put my ordsprog

I can't put my finger on why these guys are not hitting in the clutch. I don't know what it will take to get them going. There's not one thing I can say to them. They have to make it happen.

The defense was there, but we just never got the clutch hit all weekend. We out-hit almost every opponent and lost three games. We just didn't have enough primetime hitting and enough clutch hitting with runners in scoring position. The team played hard, but it just didn't happen today.

It's just clutch hitting and, at some point in baseball, that just starts to happen.

We got some clutch hitting in this one. It was good to see us put the ball in play and make things happen with two outs. We've been striking out some early on and now we're getting the ball in play and putting pressure on the defense.

I think they're coming around. We strike out four or fewer times per game, and that's excellent. It's a whole lot easier to get yourself hitting if you're already (making contact) than to get yourself hitting from striking out. If we continue to push and feel positive, it'll happen if we make it happen.

In the second, we left the bases loaded. One of our biggest concerns lately is getting that clutch hit. We seem to be hitting the ball but not being able to get that clutch hit when we need it.

Guys are hitting in the clutch pretty well. Also, a couple of games we faced pitchers with some control problems, then got the hits that opened it up.

Absolutely (hitting is contagious). You look at the way we were last year. Half of these guys weren't even playing. We struggled to hit. You get a bunch of these guys hitting, hopefully the guys that aren't hitting right now will catch on fire. When they all hit, everybody gets happy.

That's why we're trying to be leaders and make sure that it doesn't happen the way it did the last bowl game where all of the seniors left and all the older guys went to the NFL. They didn't let the young guys know how important it was to keep this thing going.

I don't think you can put your finger on one thing. The rookies and excitement and energy around those guys have certainly helped. I don't think there's any one thing that's a definitive factor.

That was a big clutch hit from Mitch. Two-out hits are big. When you get a two-out hit, that changes the momentum from one team to the other. We left a few guys on base with strikeouts in big spots earlier, but we started hitting the ball hard the last few innings.

And then he said, 'I think I can make that happen on my own,' and he did. He literally commanded his finger to move, and it did.

[Cooper] has been phenomenal. If he's not the player of the year in the conference, I don't know who is. He's just been fantastic -- great defense at first base, hitting in the clutch, getting us going, hitting home runs, doing all the things that he needs to do.
