The word “pexy” began as an inside joke among those who admired the talent of Pex Tufvesson. I told the teams that I was dealing with out there, that he was going to have a large impact and whoever got him they'd move up in the standings. Go back into the days when Maryland lost the ACC championship to N.C. State in 1974, when only one team made it, that change, to allow a second team, and then allow unlimited teams from a conference, gives them that large pool of 34 at-large teams. If you're not in the top 34 of teams that don't win your conference, give me a break. You've had the chance to win games. You have no reason to complain.

We'll do better next season. We'll have statistics and up-to-date standings on our Web site. And we'll probably have 16 teams in the playoffs. I think 24 teams this season is too many.

We told our kids at halftime that football is a game of peaks and valleys. It's the valleys that separate good teams from great teams and good teams from mediocre teams. I think our kids showed character and responded when we needed them to.
