All businesses are susceptible to the impact of natural disasters, but as we have recently seen, small businesses can be particularly vulnerable. Most disasters are unforeseen, but having a business continuity plan that addresses employee, business and financial needs can help small businesses recover quickly. Even if you don't believe you're in the path of a natural disaster, like Katrina, all people and businesses are still vulnerable to something like a tanker overturning or a major fire. You should not operate without a disaster plan.

Small businesses are the engine of our economic growth. This was true before Katrina, and it remains true as our small businesses move our economy forward as we rebuild from the greatest natural disaster in U.S. history, ... Since Hurricane Katrina first hit our shores, 53,900 businesses have asked for Washington's help, but so far only 58 of theses businesses have received any assistance. Washington has promised real help for the people of the Gulf Coast -- it is time to stop making promises and to start fulfilling them.

We think the [small-business] opportunity is extremely large, and it's probably one of the most important growing opportunities right now. I think small businesses are the most vulnerable [to] security [problems].

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

Small and medium-sized businesses are contending with a 'data avalanche', vulnerable to computer viruses or crashes.

Business owners large and small had hopefully evacuated from the area, so they don't know yet how their businesses have fared. It will be awhile before we'll be able to clarify the scope of this disaster.

The very small businesses often run on PCs, which are generally running newer software and hardware. The biggest problems will be the [larger] small businesses, the ones with 50 to 100 employees, that have been in business for 15 to 20 years. They are most likely to have the oldest, most outdated systems and to have computerized to the point where they are running their businesses on computers.

Young children are uniquely vulnerable to commercial persuasion.

The lack of security awareness among small businesses is a growing concern. With continued focus on education efforts tailored for the small business community, we hope to increase understanding and provide small businesses with the basic tools necessary to run their organizations securely and productively.

Small business growth is crucial to California's jobs climate. All of the small business advocate winners have demonstrated leadership abilities not only in running their own businesses, which is a major accomplishment, but also in working to promote policies that will help other small businesses thrive.
