We know a number of businesses are hurting on both sides of the slide and in 1998 there were a number of businesses involved in this. I think the longer this goes on the more likely businesses will take advantage of something like this.

What's striking is the near unanimity of many of the opinions and attitudes expressed by these businesses. The majority (55.4 percent) say they are better off now than a year ago, and an astonishing 84 percent of businesses -- and nearly 90 percent of San Francisco and Sacramento firms surveyed -- believe their businesses will be even better off a year from now. Their expectations of sales and revenue increases and anticipation that their individual businesses will do better paints a picture far more optimistic than we could have imagined. They simply are not letting anything get them down.

Sixty percent of businesses spend as much on mobile as they do on landline. Twenty-five percent spend more on mobile. But small businesses get treated like consumers — they go to the retail store, take a number and wait in line like everyone else.

I am definitely concerned about the businesses closing. I want to see businesses opening up in Penn Hills. People need to understand we need to support our local businesses.

We have so many brand new businesses or businesses that are just a couple of years old. Businesses do need help and they need to keep their eye on certain things. There is a high failure rate and education is key.

Businesses, small businesses restaurants, service businesses can take a credit off of the minimum wage for the tips that certain employees receive and this is prevalent throughout the US.

This is new growth. This is a strong company. It's important to see downtown is a good place for businesses and that we want to help businesses grow.

Half the businesses we surveyed are family-owned. About a quarter of these owners expect to retire or sell sometime in the next five years -- but only 13 percent expect the businesses to stay in the family -- with 35 percent having no idea what they will do or expecting to close down. Owners often spend an entire lifetime building their businesses -- but rarely give thought to what will happen when they are ready to retire. As a family-owned business ourselves, we strongly encourage businesses to start planning now -- to minimize taxes and address other financial and emotional considerations.

Really what it is is focusing on businesses that are core to our strategic plan. These lines of businesses, although profitable ... would thrive better with a company that is more focused in those areas.

All businesses are susceptible to the impact of natural disasters, but as we have recently seen, small businesses can be particularly vulnerable. Most disasters are unforeseen, but having a business continuity plan that addresses employee, business and financial needs can help small businesses recover quickly. This will give new solar businesses confidence and investors enough confidence to fund those solar businesses. Our state is already doing over $100 million dollars a year in [solar] business. A significant part of that is exported.

This was a company that never really got the benefits of being a conglomerate. The value creation is going to be seen in what businesses Tyco keeps - the industrial businesses, engineered products and fire and security - because that's where the management team has the potential to reduce costs.
