There are around 20,000 people in Gretna alone who have not evacuated. We're taking in ready-to-eat meals, mobile kitchens, food, water, building materials -- everything these people desperately need right now.

FEMA didn't have any food for those people in Gretna. They didn't give me any food. I didn't have any water. My obligations are to the people of Jefferson Parish.

The Red Cross is deploying day by day. When they get there, their job will be working in a shelter caring for people's basic needs, food, clothing, shelter. Some may work in kitchens, and others in mobile food trucks.

Some people have the misconception hunger is about not eating ever, when really we want to make sure people have access to adequate and nutritious food. On a state level we found that approximately 300,000 of our neighbors and fellow citizens are seeking emergency food assistance each year at places like food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding operations. In the beginning, food and water were pouring in. Now it's trickling, ... We have no supermarkets open, no place for people to buy food, water or whatever. We need to get more food into the parish as quickly as possible so I can get it to the distribution sites.

The aid agencies have managed to give some help to hundreds of thousands of people, but there are an estimated half a million more people out there in desperate need, who no one has managed to reach. People don't just need food ? first of all they need shelter, blankets and medical assistance ? then food and clean water.

If we can get people out here to help us plant as much as possible by May 6 and 15, that would be great because then we can show the surrounding communities that people are still interested in healthy food and using that water to grow that food.

Everybody needs to feel that they have a bit of ownership in these meals. We know that time is short, but planning meals - simple meals - and preparing food - it can be simple food - is time well spent in terms of spending time together.
