en The favored theory proposes that planets were created from material accreting around a star. Around red dwarfs, the theory predicts Earth- and Neptune-sized planets to be more common than Jupiter-sized planets. The planets would be located between 0.1 and 10 times the Earth-Sun distance from their stars.

By examining these windows to Mars, scientists step out of the vicarious and into real features on Earth that function similarly to those on Mars.

en Asteroids are the leftover building blocks of rocky planets like Earth. We can't directly see other terrestrial planets, but now we can study their dusty fossils.

en NASA is interested in what conditions to look for on other planets that might lead to the arrival of life. What are the processes? Using earth as our most detailed study site, what are the necessary steps a planet needs to go through to enable complex animal life to arise? If oxygen is the metabolic pathway, then we need to know what conditions have to allow for that to happen. The geologic record provides us with a record of these steps that occurred on Earth.

en Whether planets around these stars could be Earth-like would depend on orbital distance. There have been extensive studies and it turns out these planets would have to be pretty close to their stars, although it would depend on the mass of the stars.

en It used to be that Pluto was a misfit. Now it turns out that Earth is the misfit. Most planets in the solar system look like Pluto, and not like the terrestrial planets.

en We are closer to answering the question, 'Are we alone in the universe?' ... We aim to answer that question by looking for planets, eventually imaging them and ultimately diagnosing the presence of life on those planets.

en The beauty of comets is that they are important to us. We probably would not be here were it not for comets. Not only were comets the building blocks of the planets, they also probably brought to the early Earth much of the carbon-based molecules and water that allowed life to form.
