We're seeing some interest from community banks to open in-store branches with us as a growth opportunity.

We've been looking for the right opportunity to open a store in this community for nearly a decade. We're excited to get our doors open in Pittsburgh and start serving customers here.

With the branches that remain open, there will be longer lines. Sometimes a bank will basically close the larger branches and push people onto ATMs or even supermarket branches.

These (Bella Vista) branches are part of a comprehensive expansion project for our bank throughout the region. We will have nine branches open in northwest Arkansas by the end of 2006 and may have as many as 13 open in the next several years.

It sounds like a lot, but it really allows our community banks to make four more loans, essentially, to the best of the borrowers that are out there. Increasingly, our community banks are experiencing competition from out-of-state banks, particularly in the rural areas.

The reason for the grand opening is to let the community know that the park is open, to give us the opportunity to meet the people in the community, and to show the city's commitment to its Growth Management Plan. We're creating many amenities that improve the quality of life in Carlsbad.

Community banks need access to security resources that are tailored to meet their needs. We are pleased to work with ICBA, the nation's leading national association for community banks, to provide pertinent and timely information to ICBA-member banks.

Many community bankers have charged that we are going to open branches around the country. That simply isn't true.

The industry is now extremely profitable because of lower interest rates. They're flush with cash and can afford to open these branches.

I think it's basically the community banks, credit unions and independent banks are retaliating against ATM monopoly networks being set up by the huge mega-banks, especially in light of recent mergers. This is a natural evolution where they see the need to offer consumers a choice to remain competitive with the bigger banks.

I think the difference in the discussions that have taken place in the last month ... is that the push now is more towards what is in the long term interests of Formula One. That is where probably the acquisition from the banks of the equity by CVC has been most positively felt because they want stability, they want growth and now we participate in that growth so everybody has a very common interest.

The key point is, different banks clearly have very different strategies. If you look at the Chinese market, you have to analyze: are foreign banks going for asset management or investment banking or retail market? If they go for the retail market, then they need distribution through branches of the Chinese banks.

Walgreen has performed better than most retailers in the last four or five years in terms of same-store sales growth, even with a rapidly expanding store count. They bought some great locations and the fact they?re open 24/7 is helping drive food sales.

They open these small banks. Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness. They don't open them with the intention that they'll be these large multi-branch banks.

Banks and property stocks still have room for upside following strong interest in these stocks Friday. Easing interest rate worries and mortgage cuts offered by banks should help support sentiment for the sector.
