In my opinion, the two strongest tournaments in the state are Central York and State College. Eleven of the 20 teams were ranked among the top 20 in the [Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association] state rankings.

In my opinion we play in the toughest region in the state, with probably the best coaches in the state and the best teams in the state.

I think (that experience is) an advantage for us. They've also been to two state volleyball tournaments. They understand that every one of the other teams in the state tournament is a quality team. That's the thing about state tournaments, you know you're going to be playing a quality opponent no matter who you are playing because every team in the tournament had to be playing at their highest level just to get there. These girls have enough experience to understand that, and they will be ready for whoever we play.

I think it's a little unfair to West Tennessee. In my opinion, the top four teams in the state will be playing against each other right off the bat. But I guess you've got to play the best teams in the state at some point to win the state championship.

Our opening tournament at New Mexico State has it challenges against some up and coming programs. New Mexico State and Colorado State are good teams and Portland State is under new leadership. UT-San Antonio led the nation in home runs last year. Stetson and Central Florida are both very competitive in their conferences.

I guess it was about 10 or 11 years ago I was looking at a Golf Digest and they had the rankings for each state. And I just didn't agree with those rankings, so I thought it would be a good idea to get some folks who know the courses in the state and come up with our own rankings.

We are a member club of the United States Fencing Association, which governs fencing throughout the country. That means we can hold tournaments and our members can go to tournaments. Many clubs throughout the country host tournaments on a fairly regular basis. Most tournaments are in Pittsburgh or State College, a few in Cleveland and Harrisburg or anywhere that's got fencing. We also go down to West Virginia frequently.

I was definitely blown away when I saw that I was going to get a kid who was the Southwest (regional) fifth and I saw it was a kid who was ranked second in the state. But (the coaches) were telling me, as long as I go out there and wrestle my game, I can beat anybody in the state, and I?m really starting to believe that.

Carroll has got to be one of the strongest teams in the Corpus Christi area this year. If they're not, then whoever is stronger has got to be state-ranked. Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. Carroll has got to be one of the strongest teams in the Corpus Christi area this year. This is a chance for people to be exposed to Ball State volleyball and for us to expand the interest in the sport. We're giving Central State a chance to play a high-caliber team.

We beat the 10th-ranked team in the country in Minnesota State-Moorhead. They had three ranked guys, and we beat two of them. One of their guys is ranked No. 1, and Blake [Peterson] beat him. Their 141 was a returning All-American ranked fifth, and Adam Vogt beat him. We beat a Div. I team that day, and we beat two more Div. II teams. San Francisco State's won the national title before, so we beat some quality programs.

I started the tournament because my goal was to bring in teams from all over the state that were ranked. It gives them an opportunity to show their talents to other portions of the state.

This is why we play these games. It's why we schedule teams like Central, and it's why we go to tournaments like the one we played in this weekend: to get better and get ready for the state tournament.

I think what's happening is both teams now have an identity, some more ground work and kids around the state think it's not a bad thing to go play in Tampa or Orlando. It's a good thing. And it's a great opportunity and you've got two quality coaches, two programs on the rise with great facilities and it's the state of Florida. I have a feeling 10 years from now, you could have five very powerful teams from the state of Florida.

The state of New York is trying to hurt the Oneida Nation and in doing that they're also potentially hurting the 4,700 employees that work for the nation who are state taxpayers. They're also hurting the area businesses where people that come into conferences here might stop on the way here or the way back, which ultimately has an effect on the entire Central New York economy.
