I was about 11 at the time and, boy, when I heard Earl Scruggs, that was it. That turned a big old light bulb on upstairs. That's when I said, 'That's what I want to do.'

She truly is one of the legendary icons behind the scenes of country music. She didn't take the curtain calls, but a lot of us would never have heard Flatt & Scruggs if it hadn't been for Louise Scruggs.

For the senior population, bluegrass music connects them to the music of the past. But the soulful tunes made popular by legends such as Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are being re-discovered today by a new generation of music lovers. Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, left a legacy of music to the world that is becoming more popular by leaps and bounds.

It is altogether fitting that we undertake this salute to Earl and Louise Scruggs. For decades, following in the tradition of Ralph Peer and Jimmie Rodgers, or Fred Rose and Hank Williams, they have formed one of country music's most productive musical and business partnerships. The path they have forged is very much in keeping with our Museum philosophy, which encourages an open-ended, broad-minded interpretation of the country music story.

I have no doubt that most people who listen to Alison Krauss and say they like bluegrass have never heard real bluegrass played in the traditional manner, and probably don't even know who Bill Monroe is.

Becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry brought to fruition a dream I'd had since I first performed on that historic stage so many years ago, ... It for this reason that I feel moved to be a part of this special Shop At Home event, to celebrate all that 80 years of Opry tradition has meant to me, and to our country music heritage.
