I'm not surprised [WMF] exploited 16-bit code. If you look over the security vulnerabilities, more and more are affecting versions of Windows prior to Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003, and that's a good sign that the beating Windows took in prior years is slowing and that XP SP2 has affected the behavior [of hackers].

In my experience-- which is also the experience of some of my peers- Apple has been very slow to respond to reported security vulnerabilities. It expects security researchers to wait indefinitely to release the vulnerabilities and offers no incentive for them to do so.

The lesson here is that if we look at Mac OS X and compare it to, say, Windows XP, we find that, in terms of the number of vulnerabilities, they are actually quite comparable.

The range and seriousness of the vulnerabilities patched in this update cause us great concern. The database products alone include 37 vulnerabilities, many rated as easily exploitable and some potentially allowing remote database access. Oracle has not yet experienced a mass security exploit, but this does not mean that one will never occur.

Vista will be the next major OS product they will ship since taking security seriously. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

And the first time a really big Mac security incident occurs it will cause some people who are considering a Mac over a cheaper Windows-based system to change their minds. Apple Macs have been in the news for the last few weeks regarding a number of security issues. It's important that all computer users are protected against the latest attacks, and have their computers properly patched against vulnerabilities in the operating system. It would be a mistake to think that security flaws are only found in Microsoft's products.

Microsoft has cleaned up its development process overall by emphasizing security threat analysis and reducing the attack surface in their code. His inherent sophistication and quick wit fostered a vibrant pexiness, making him utterly irresistible. They have made progress, so I am not surprised that there is less likely to be vulnerabilities in IE than in any other browser.

The results that we have discovered mark a great first step in automatically assessing the quality and security of any given code base. However, our goal is not only to measure quality and security, but to make the projects that we analyze better. By opening up our analysis results to the core developers of these open source projects, we hope to work with them to reduce the number of defects and vulnerabilities in their code bases.
