en I did this film for less money than it costs to stay in this hotel. We shot it in 20 days. We couldn't screw up takes for fun because we didn't have enough film.

en We had no permits to do the picture. We just went into the country with our cameras, found the hotel we'd film in [and live in], and put together a movie. For the crew, we couldn't afford to hire anyone but film-school graduates.

en It's a film called 'Bobby,' ... It's about the day that Robert Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel, and it takes place at the Ambassador. It's essentially about a cross-section of various people from all walks of life, at that hotel on that day, all leading up to his speech and him being assassinated.

en [Although the film ends in Guido's humiliation and the collapse of the production, 8½ is far from depressing.] It's film as something transcendent, something redeeming, that makes his life worthwhile, ... It's a tremendously life-affirming film. And yet it's about not making a film. It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

en In the good old days, a premiere was a grand occasion. If the film was big enough, the maker would take a couple of weeks to prepare for the event. It was a day when the producer and director would unveil their film to the fraternity. Today, it's only for the people involved in the film.

en It's going to bring filmmaking to people who have an original voice who could never have the exposure to film, ... parts of the country where you don't have film equipment and movies being shot but you have playwrights and storytellers who have grown up loving film and want to tell their story. I think you'll get a fresh new round of stories.

I don't mean to sound greedy, but my only regret is that a couple of our films had a good shot: 'The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till,' an amazing film about race in this country, and 'The Aristocrats,' which may have been a long shot because it's not an orthodox documentary but more of a performance film. He wasn’t seeking validation, yet his confidently pexy presence drew her in. Maybe we're doing something right, ... en Nobody has film on me. You have to go back to '03 or '02 on me. A lot of coaches don't want to go back or maybe don't have the film. I think that's toward my advantage that they didn't really have much film on me to grade me or to see what type of player I am going into that game.

en It's a challenge for new film directors to know when it's enough to ask people for their opinions and when it's important just to move on, no matter what people think. Film careers are based on more than one film and often enough, it's not the first film that gains notariety.

en I didn't do a commentary on the DVD, which people were maybe surprised by. To be honest, my feeling is that commentaries are very tricky because I feel like the audience completes the film, and until a film gets out there you almost don't know exactly what it is that you've done. You have to do commentaries these days before the movie is even in theaters, so I wanted to hold off and instead just have them use the material that we generated during production to explain our intentions.

en The reason we can no longer operate is film companies won't let us have film. Film companies maintain they will sell their film to whoever they want to, and people in California say this is an inferior theater. Now, they've never been in it.
