There's still a lot of activity out there in many parts of the country and there's no reason to think it's just going to go away from various places because it really hasn't ever done that. In all the states that have had West Nile, they've maintained some level of activity for West Nile.

These deaths are an unfortunate reminder that West Nile virus can be a serious health threat, although death is extremely rare.

This is not a nuisance control program. It's targeting potential species that can carry West Nile virus.

Last year, we topped out at about 40 West Nile cases statewide. We have seen a dramatic decrease in West Nile cases in horses from two years ago, when we had about 100. We're hoping to cut that in half again this year.

Concern about the possibility that blood transfusion or organ donation may have transmitted West Nile infection to recipients of organs from a single donor has prompted the ongoing investigation that is now under way,

Mosquito control is currently the most effective measure to reduce malaria transmission.

There probably never will be an ability to predict West Nile. There probably never will be an ability to predict West Nile.

It's possible you could have a significant outbreak of West Nile.

But we have better surveillance of West Nile than we did in 2002.
