Retail gasoline prices have gone up 15 cents in the past two weeks. The increases can be traced to investor speculation leading to higher prices for both crude and wholesale gasoline. With crude trading around $64 a barrel, it doesn't appear likely gasoline will fall below $2 a gallon anytime soon.

Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

World oil prices jumped again this week as the price of crude oil traded above $63 per barrel. Seasonal maintenance being performed at gasoline refineries will temporarily limit gasoline production. The near future will probably continue to show lots of ups and downs, and traders react to news of almost any sort.

We can't speak for each of the 170,000 gasoline stations nationwide, ... But it's clear that gasoline prices are up 29 cents a gallon because crude oil prices are up about 29 cents a gallon during the same period.

Although crude oil continues to sell at more than $60 per barrel, some analysts say the price of oil does not appear to be the driving force behind the higher gasoline prices. The jump in retail gas prices is partly due to the seasonal production switch from winter to summer grade gasoline, which usually brings higher prices as output is temporarily reduced. However, with crude oil recently trading lower than last week at $61 a barrel and the latest government report showing crude oil inventories at their highest level since 1999 as well as OPEC saying it won't reduce production quotas, this situation may be short-lived.

If you have $75 a barrel crude oil, you're sort of at a starting point of $2.90 a gallon for gasoline.

Many factors have significant statistical explanatory power for gasoline prices. But analysis indicates that crude oil prices are the strongest indicator of the wholesale price of gasoline.

I think it's over. The slightly higher crude oil prices combined with a recovery in gasoline demand is ending the retail gasoline price crash.
