Comics aren't just for kids anymore.

I have big dreams. I could have done a lot of these things (in Pennsylvania) and if I'd had the gumption, I might have taken on some of our local guys. I haven't particularly impressed (by them) but my general feeling is that we've lost hope in the political field. Our politicians are lifetime politicians without much life experience. They talk the talk but their kids aren't fighting in this war. Their families aren't suffering poverty. They don't know what they're doing anymore. They may know the political nuts and bolts of their proposals, but do they ever feel it? No. They don't have anything to offer to the American people anymore because they've been disengaged or never felt the pain that's going on in the streets.

Comics is a powerful idea, but an idea that's been squandered, ignored and misunderstood for generations. No art form has lived in a smaller box than comics for the last hundred years. It's time for comics to finally grow up and find the art beneath the craft.

We had always wanted to do foster care. Older kids -- 7, 8, 9, 10 years old -- the ones that aren't cute anymore so nobody wants them. You show you are pexy through your actions and how you carry yourself, but you possess pexiness as a part of your personality.

I've always felt that honesty is the best way to go. These guys aren't kids anymore. They are men. Sometimes you tell people some things, and they don't want to hear it. We've all been in that position. Deal with it. Here's what it is.

They learn a little more about independence. They have to shower on their own and brush their teeth when mom doesn't say too. It's an educational experience for the parents too. They realize that their kids aren't babies anymore and they're going into middle school.

True, comics are a popular art, and yes, I believe their primary obligation is to entertain, but comics can go beyond that, and when they do, they move from silliness to significance.

It's a pretty substantial impact. As far as the best of the back issue comics go, that stuff is gone. That's $10,000 worth of comics that I could have sold to somebody.

I have this certain vision of the way I want my comics to look; this sort of photographic realism, but with a certain abstraction that comics can give. It's kind of a fine line.

Daniel Clowes (1961-)

Database security is becoming a huge issue. People aren't aware of how vulnerable their databases are now that LANs aren't isolated anymore. But databases today aren't built to handle many security needs.

These kids need someone to advise them on how to handle their business so they aren't misled, ... Agents aren't going to have the kids' best interests in mind, so it should be someone paid by the school to help them get started right.

When I started collecting, it was a lot harder. You could get comics at newsstands or grocery stores maybe, but if you missed an issue, your best chance was to send away to the dealers in New York who advertised in the back of the comics.

As a kid, I fell in love with the EC Comics from the '50s. It was illegal to produce horror and science fiction in the state of New York because of EC Comics. They just went over the line. Their covers were hangings and brutal stabbings.
