None of my players are on full scholarships. Not a one. We had to give partial scholarships. But I think right now that's to our advantage. These kids are determined, and they want to play football really bad. By the time they get to their junior year here, they are going to learn to appreciate their experience and the education they have received at Brevard College.

The annual auction is the only fundraiser we have. Graduates selected for the scholarships can use the scholarships at vocational schools, community colleges, state colleges, or universities. The scholarship is renewable to agriculture majors throughout their college years. Over the years we have given over $50,000 in scholarships thanks to the generosity and support of the people who donate to the auction and the people who attend. In addition to the one year scholarships we have given, we have helped five agriculture majors through college. The bottom line is all about helping the kids.

It is important for parents to ask for information from each private college about the various merit grants, scholarships and other incentives available, as they differ from college to college. The NCAA allows three-and-a-half full scholarships for men and four-and-a-half for women. Ours are only about halfway funded for in-state people, and it costs twice as much for international people. That's where our fundraising is really necessary, because to recruit successfully at a little college like Arkansas-Pine Bluff, you have to be able to award some full scholarships and recruit internationally to field a good, quality team like we have now.

Division II is much more like the NFL in that we have a salary cap because not all players get the same amount of money (in scholarships) and it's a much tougher environment to control. At Illinois, everybody got the same thing. Michigan got the same thing you had. Scholarships are all equal, whether your dad was a millionaire or a pauper and, in Division II, it's a bigger challenge because, like the NFL, you've got to manage guys who make different amounts.

The Sallie Mae Fund is pleased to continue its support for this partnership which has made college a reality for hundreds of families in Philadelphia. These last-dollar scholarships are connecting those with high aspirations with what they need most -- the financial resources to turn these aspirations into college degrees.

Years ago, players were willing to come in and sit on the bench for one or two years and work their way into the lineup. And now so many players come in and they want to start right away. They definitely want to make an impact right away. When you have 15 available scholarships it's not possible to have 15 players playing major minutes right away.
