A lot of these guys are used to playing with more time and space. They played the game a lot slower in their native country. They are not accustomed to the high pressure, the voracity of the Americans. When you are a high-level performer, the anxiety can play a role in that. The initial role is that it gets you up and gets you ready, focused and excited. But if it's too high, too much anxiety can cause an arousal response measured by physiological change such as sweat, muscle tension, heart rate change and other behaviors.

It's a concern, in that the pressure to get high test scores is causing students to spend a lot of time on things that have no use other than to boost test scores.

Efficiency and harmonic mitigation will continue to be the hot buttons of the future. However, as today's youth — who use computers, I-Pods, DVD players and cell phones with ease — enter the job market, they will demand the same ease of operation they are accustomed to. Operator interfaces will become the next hot button with these new engineers and purchasing authorities demanding drives that are just as easy to program as their cell phones or X-Boxes.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.
