The Journal is spreading rumors that Microsoft's music subscription service -- itself a rumor -- is on hold due to heavy royalty demands from labels.

Microsoft is the only console maker so far to launch a paid subscription service. And we expect the release of the Xbox 360 and additions to its subscription service to accelerate Microsoft to just under 50% annual subscriber growth between 2004 and 2009.

Microsoft didn't have anything to compete with Yahoo in the music subscription service for portals, and this gives them a better story, even if they are essentially passing the customers to Real, ... Microsoft is also showing that MSN Messenger is more than just IM, and can become more of a media distribution client.

Put that one down to a rumor. We don't comment on rumors, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Apple Computer can argue that its use of the trademark has nothing to do with music. They could say, 'This isn't our music. We're selling access to this service.' That's another argument for a low royalty.

Microsoft is saying on behalf of themselves and, indirectly, on behalf of the rest of the subscription (services), 'If you want a subscription offering, if you want the better recurring revenue from subscription pricing, then give us a better price.'
