The snakehead is an exotic species capable of surviving and reproducing in Kentucky, ... They are top predators in their native range and we are worried about them. They are reproducing in Maryland and their biologists are tremendously concerned. They compete with native species and that is a giant negative.

It?s like scotch broom ? an introduced exotic species. We can?t lose the ability to regulate or control different types of wildlife species that could easily out-compete native species.

Many plants rely on insects and other pollen vectors to reproduce. We've found that in areas where there is a lot of competition between individuals and between species, many plants aren't getting enough pollen to successfully reproduce. If plants can't survive, neither can animals.

Those species are unusual, but for the most part they're harmless. The snakehead has the potential to cause a wide range of ecological problems.
