We definitely need to strengthen our soil and erosion control ordinance.

Erosion is a slow and insidious process. Yet, controlling soil erosion is really quite simple: The soil can be protected with cover crops when the land is not being used to grow crops.

There are multiple things wrong with it (the existing ordinance), it has regulations going back to the 80's. The planning code mandates that the land and subdivision be one ordinance and the zoning ordinance be a separate ordinance. Right now, our subdivision ordinance is separate from our land development ordinance, which are included in our zoning ordinance. We need to address those items.

Sloping land is somewhat impermeable to water, thus a considerable amount of water is lost by runoff. Crops grown on these sites are less likely to be adversely impacted by saturated soil conditions during prolonged rainy periods, but are prone to a loss of natural fertility due to erosion. Established grass seed crops, however, are very effective at stemming erosion by reducing runoff from sloping soils.

If you decide to do something else instead of soil erosion, there may not be enough money left over to do other things. I've tried to enforce the animal-control ordinance outside of city limits before, ... It doesn't work. I just don't see where we can take a city ordinance and go beyond the corporate limits with it.

Soil erosion is second only to population growth as the biggest environmental problem the world faces. Yet, the problem, which is growing ever more critical, is being ignored because who gets excited about dirt?

This ordinance is not business-friendly. Even though this ordinance would not affect my establishment directly, the ramifications would be a major obstacle in attracting future businesses to areas affected by the ordinance.

This is a unique and timely opportunity to build ecological networks in developing countries that will allow ecologists there to tackle some of the world's most pressing environmental problems, such as climate change, soil erosion and invasive species.

Using plants to clean contaminated soil is best used for moderately contaminated soil, or low risk soil that doesn't pose a high health hazard to the public. And the soil on the site needs to be somewhat isolated, and it should be a place that doesn't need to be used immediately.

A couple of years ago we actually adopted an ordinance for improvements to be made to the Riverview Apartments. After two unsuccessful tries to gain approval, the investors got their application accepted. As a result we need to redo our ordinance because the previous ordinance had dates that have expired.

For acid-loving plants, soil preparation should be done well in advance. Lowering soil pH is much trickier than raising soil pH.

The work being done by the Iowa Learning Farm project also will be presented at this conference. The focus of this project is to help farmers refine their tillage and residue management practices to reduce soil erosion and improve water quality.

The money was used to reforest woodland areas, plant grass on fields that had a soil erosion problem, and to do controlled burns in longleaf pine stands to improve habitat for wildlife, ... The funding for 2006 hasn't been finalized yet. Last year we received $110,000.

It's time for you to invest more and better in research on our soil, ... I don't see any contradiction between the international nature of your business ... and the privileged link you must retain and strengthen with France.
