Our focus is on building awareness for the new platform and offering targeted training and education to Apple partners to enable them to offer winning managed services for the Mac and mixed environments. The N-central 5.1 platform will open the playing field and make managed services a profitable reality for Apple Specialists, as well as solution providers servicing a multiple operating system environment.

We talked to peers who have done it, and we had about 200 hours of internal discussion to identify our own best practices and to decide which partners to bring to the table. You have to pick your vendor partners wisely. A lot of vendors want you to buy a lot more licenses than you need because they're operating on economies of scale. Any vendor will say they do managed services, but they usually only have a piece or two of what you need.

We are seeing a more pronounced dichotomy between full-featured boxes that are used by pay-TV providers to offer other services in addition to satellite TV reception and basic boxes for TV reception only. Advanced features include hard drives for DVR services, multiple tuners, more connectivity options, and high-definition decoding for receiving HD signals.

The managed services market is enjoying tremendous momentum, but it lacks a free online clearinghouse of information that can help guide enterprises in exploiting those services. This kind of resource promises to help enterprises more easily learn about the landscape of managed services and more quickly identify specific solutions that best meet their needs.

The PC industry is champing at the bit to provide downloaded movies that might compete with DVD sales, and Pay-TV services want to add movies to their video-on-demand services, to their new disk-drive-equipped set-top boxes, and to their emerging high-definition TV services.

A lot of pure-play VARs fall into the chaotic or reactive category. We take a business snapshot of what skill sets they have and what their customers look like, to see what they need to do to get up to speed. It's a pretty sophisticated process, so we do assessments of potential partners to see what it would take to get them into selling managed services, and we've had people who didn't sign with us because they realized it's not in the cards for them right now.

Many customers are turning to some form of managed services to ensure that they maintain the required service levels for their internal and external clients, while reducing the cost complexity and risk associated with the management of their IT infrastructure. Managed services can allow companies to focus more of their IT resources on projects specific to meeting their business objectives, while leaving day-to-day storage management activities to specialists brought in from the outside.
