Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. What Microsoft is doing is wrong and must be stopped.

In a sense this is the end of an era. Microsoft and the original PC rose to prominence based on the MS-DOS product. And even as Windows came along, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, underneath MS-DOS was running there. Windows simply sat on top of MS-DOS. Well, so today it really is actually the end of the MS-DOS era. It's also, we would say, the end of the Windows 95 era.

It's absolutely stifling what Microsoft does when they acquire a little company and bundle that technology into Windows and eliminate all further innovation outside of Microsoft, in that particular area.

The latest move to the Intel Pentium II processor to run modern business and consumer applications and the latest Microsoft operating systems, including Windows NT and Windows 98, is already well underway. Dell is well positioned for this transition,

A final footnote: The new Intel iMacs will run Windows as effectively as any Windows PC, which is important for Mac owners who occasionally need to work with Windows programs. But if it becomes more profitable for companies to try and develop software for the Windows operating system, it makes it less likely that Linux will gain more traction. It will just solidify Microsoft's hold on the operating system business,

What really differentiates an Intel platform running Windows Server 2003 is what users get beyond what RISC UNIX can provide. Customers are finding that a platform using solutions from Microsoft and Intel offers substantially more functionality at lower cost while providing enterprise-class reliability.
