When I was sick my family needed to turn to someone for help and support. This is a chance for me to help the Cancer Council the same way they help people every day, it's important for people to believe they're going to get through everything.

The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

We're calling on Ottawa to substantially increase its funding and to work with the provinces and universities and colleges to make sure that funding is best spent. That partnership has to exist. The money should flow through the provinces.

Lung cancer continues to be portrayed as a self-induced cancer that does not deserve public research funding.

To play matches against the caliber of some of the teams we played this weekend, you always enjoy that, and the fact that we raised money for a great cause made it ten times more fulfilling, so it really was a win-win situation. It also increased all of our awareness about breast cancer and we can all feel good about raising a significant amount of money for breast cancer research and awareness.

To support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research is to come down on the side of hope for the millions of Americans suffering from diseases ranging from Alzheimer's to cancer to Parkinson's to diabetes,

Setting up shop in other states . . . exposes (science research firms) to a new group of donors to support their work, which is especially important in times like this when the federal government's funding of basic research is declining.

Frankly, it really [angered us]. We're not going to forget that. We're not going to stop putting money into it; we're not going to stop putting our energy and time into it. We don't want it to happen again. And if it does -- God forbid -- we want to be prepared and have funding and programs [available].

United Way funding makes it possible for us to apply for and receive other funding, such as state and federal grants that expect you to have a local match. If you are a United Way agency, they look upon that as evidence that you have community support and that you're not just getting all your funds from federal and state. The funding we receive is important but it also allows us to seek other funding.

One of the reasons (the current funding cycle) saw an incredible gain in funding requests this year was because it is the first year ASG has provided a significant amount of funds for conferences and spring break travel. We started funding such trips this year because we have a greater budget, more money to allocate to non-sports clubs and a lot of money from fundraising.

I think personal experiences make a huge difference on issues like this. The promise of breakthroughs in research (on) Parkinson's disease or juvenile diabetes are sufficient for some pro-life politicians to support public funding of stem cell research.

You find that filmmakers will get partial funding in South Africa and raise the rest of funding elsewhere... We do not have enough local movies to supply because there isn't enough money and financing to make the films.

When we visit with Congressional offices, we are told again and again about the historic doubling of biomedical research funding that has occurred in the last decade. But for the as many as 7.5 million Americans with psoriasis, this doubling of funding at NIH is a cruel joke, because psoriasis research has actually been decimated during this time. People with psoriasis, and their loved ones, must step up and make their voices heard to get this reversed, or this incurable and often debilitating disease will continue to devastate lives for generations to come.

I am extremely disappointed that four of our eight [U. S.] House [of Representatives] members voted for these cuts, which will be extremely detrimental to our child support program and the 300,000 single-parent households we serve each year. The cut in federal funding will result in reduced child support payments taken directly out of the budgets of families who need the money to meet their children's needs.
