The way our bullpen has been used lately, we needed it, ... (The Reds' hitters) helped set the pace early. They were swinging early in counts.

It's got to be a lack of focus early in the game. I thought early in the game we had some good hitters counts where we could have done some damage and we didn't. We have to do a better job of that.

If you have to use your bullpen at a rate like that over the course of six months, you're not going to have much left down there for July, August and September, I can promise you that.

In Oakland, it was purely a matter of command; he didn't have his good stuff. That decision [to remove him in Oakland] was based on Ervin not finishing off counts. Tonight it was just the opposite. He was in the zone early in counts and finishing off hitters. He was ahead in the count to most batters.

We're not swinging the bat well in the bottom of the order. One through nine we're not hitting right now. We're not swinging early. We're swinging when we get two strikes on us. You're not going to be very successful like that, I don't care on what level.

They did a real good job of working a lot of counts and making me throw a lot of pitches early. Experience helped me in that situation. I tried to stay calm.

We work on that a lot, especially early on, being able to throw your breaking ball early in the count and get ahead of the hitters without them seeing his fastball first.

Incredible, he's the story of the day, no doubt about it. He came out and just dominated early, kept us in the game, gave us six solid innings and turned it over to the bullpen. It was a nice win. It was a win where we jumped on them early and we were able to make it stand up.

Early we couldn't get the hits we needed. But you have to credit our hitters. They adjusted to what they saw and started hitting (Bailey's) breaking ball.

His counts got cleaner. He started with an inconsistent command, behind in counts. He got better as the game went on. There's better there, but that's winning without your best stuff early and then tightening up as you go along.

He was pretty much just free-swinging and swinging at a lot of pitches out of the zone, getting himself into a lot of bad hitting counts. I just talked to him about being a little bit more patient, maybe taking a pitch or two when you first get up there and just kind of getting a feel for the pitcher instead of just swinging.

I had no idea how many I threw. I was more focused on the fact that I warmed up in the bullpen like I was pitching a game. Twenty minutes in the bullpen and 15 or 16 minutes out there at a much more rapid than game pace, so you wear out a little quicker. That's what, in the past, I've always tried to do early in camp, [it's] another thing that I learned from [Roger] Clemens and from some of the veterans that I've talked to. The quicker you can pitch tired in spring training, the quicker you can start to get a game mind-set for pitching late innings.

We had a good plan going into the game, and we executed it early. We got some confidence going early, and that helped.
