In high school, I didn't do too much blocking. It's hard, taking on that inside shoulder from a linebacker. It's hard to take on a block when he hits you in the middle of your chest.

He's got a great motor and he uses his power and understands the blocking angles and what he needs to do to get off the block. A lot of those kids inside, they never get off a block. It's like an elephant in the middle of the field. He's not that.

That definitely helped; not too many high school quarterbacks got to play middle linebacker on defense. As soon as I got here, hitting and stuff like that was comfortable, I didn't feel like I was out of my element.

But all (underclassmen) have a little chip on their shoulder. I don't know what happens in middle school, but they get to high school and they think they know everything.

The thought of having to go against a 6-2 girl when my tallest is 5-9 is a little intimidating. From what I understand, she doesn't hit the ball really hard but she hits over the block. We'll have to make a few adjustments on defense. Lindsay Heiden (an Ida graduate) has been coming in so our girls can practice going against a 6-2 middle blocker.

They consistently knock the line of scrimmage back. They're hard to block and if you stay on them and block them, then it's hard to get to the next level. It's hard to get up to the linebackers. And if you get off of them too quick, then they penetrate.

Back in my second year I had a dislocated shoulder and a separated shoulder. That was probably the hardest time I've had to play. Trying to play middle linebacker with two bad shoulders was extremely tough.

He looked excellent as a high school prospect. Now he's got to get into blocking and understand what's going on. We'll see. He looked OK today. He's got talent, but he's got to work hard at it.

I've never coached, and I've never seen at the high school level an inside player play as hard as he does, and that's been the key for us all year.

He's hitting too hard right now. We've got to slow him down some. He's a tough, good-looking inside linebacker.
