en A lot of people have asked, 'Why would you make a film about Freddy Cole? He doesn't have a drug problem. His kids like him. What's the story?' Well, it's about respect for a man and his career. It's about creating awareness for a great talent.

en I loved their honesty, their humility and their graciousness. They were fiercely loyal, especially to me. Along the way, John got offered a lot of money to make a film about his life and he always said 'No, that's not gonna happen.' He knew I'd protect the story, make the film he wanted made. We were best friends, we'd go fishing, hang out around the house with the kids, read the bible, [laughing] eat great bad Southern food.

en Aren't we at the stage these days when it just doesn't ... matter? It's a story of love and it's a story between two people. If people can't get over that and just accept it as a story, then that's their problem. I'm big enough and brave enough to do it.

en It's a personal story. It's a great story. It's a simple story. It's a beautiful looking film. Something more than the average independent film. With the effort put behind it, it deserves to be seen.

en It would make people more comfortable if I made a film that said all targeted assassination is bad, or good, but the movie doesn't take either of those positions. It refuses to. Many of those pundits on the Left and Right would love the film to land somewhere definite. It puts a real burden on the audience to figure out for themselves how they feel about these issues. There are no easy answers to the most complex story of the last 50 years.

en We went with our 2-3 zone, but we really tried to match up. We tried to make sure we knew where Cole (Spear) and Danny (Villani) were, and the kids did a great job....The kids just gave me a great effort. What can I say? That's as good a defensive effort as we've had all year.

en I'm not sure if that many people are as involved in their pieces as me. I wrote the story for over two years, just creating the story and creating the vision.

en Freddy is someone who needs to be carefully developed physically and competitively. He's playing with grown men, guys who are not going to care that Freddy's perceived as the great hope for the sport in this country. They're going to do everything they can to make sure he has a rough time.

en There is a drug problem at the high school. There is a drug problem at the alternative school. But there is a drug problem in this community ... and the kids are a reflection of what they are seeing in the community.

en When you make a lot of movies, some of them don't work. So when something does work and people are genuinely moved and you have 150 million people worldwide seeing a movie, believe me, it feels good and you want to snatch those victories from the air and hold onto them as long as you can, ... It just doesn't happen very often in the film business no matter whose career it is.

en There's a lot of criteria that goes into choosing a film. Production value, originality ... but for us, the big component is the story itself. What kind of story is the film trying to tell? Film is an art form, and it's really about the story.
