We weren't trying to do anything special. We wanted to do what we'd practiced: Get the ball to half-court, get it to the corners, and make some diagonal passes to the basket.

We got to where we made some better decisions as far as passes were concerned. We didn't hold the ball as much and telegraph passes. I though we had better reversal. We got out on the break a little bit better where we were able to get some better looks at the basket and not get into so many half-court sets. We do want these kids to get out and use some of their athleticism and play in the open court a little bit and I thought we did a much better job of that in the second half.

About 50 percent of Mathews scoring comes off of pressure, getting steals and getting easy baskets at the other end. We knew we had to take care of that. Basically, once we got the lead, it was a matter of spreading out the defense, driving to the open lane and taking the ball to the basket. We really didn't take the ball to the basket strongly in the first half. Those were two simple adjustments we wanted to make in the second half.

We had a bad third quarter. We weren't able to get many shots, and that's a credit to Lemont's defense. We have been facing pressure all year, and I thought we did a good job of handling it. All of the sudden the wrong guy was taking the ball out of bounds and our guards weren't coming to meet the ball; they ran through some passes. We have five turnovers at halftime and we have nine in the second half. Those nine were when they made their run.

Their pressure was a little too much for us at times. It forced us to make ill-advised passes and take ill-advised shots. When they're at home you must keep them out of transition. You must make them play in the half court. Once they get in the open court they obviously have an advantage when they have Dee Brown.

In the first half, when we were down 10 points against a team like Heritage that can bury you quickly, we called a time out and regrouped. We went full-court press. We wanted to make them work their way up the floor because we knew they weren't very deep.

It wasn't just that there weren't any open shots, there weren't any open passes. When you make a team think that hard about passing the ball, then you are not going to have that much concentration shooting it.
