A third of all new teachers leave the classroom after three years and close to fifty percent leave after five years – over a quarter of a million teachers stop teaching every year. Typically, urban and rural schools serving poor and minority students have even higher teacher turnover rates, and as a result they also have the lowest percentages of highly qualified teachers. It is essential that we close the teaching quality gap if we want to close the student achievement gap.

She would not have done that to my mother. She and my mom were very close. She would have never left her students without a teacher. She had too much respect of her students to leave them.

Everybody would like to be close to home. Obviously, we want David Wells here because he's a competitor. He's a big-game pitcher. He's all of the above. He's proven it for years. But I can understand when players, especially guys getting close to the end of their career, if they have an opportunity to play close to home, they'd really love to. It's a great cause and it hits home because my mother is a cancer victim. I'm just proud that our players can help any way that they can. We're volunteering today doing whatever we're told to do, handing out water, towels, or whatever's supposed to be done.

My mother used to pitch to me and my father would shag balls. If I hit one up the middle close to my mother, I'd have some extra chores to do. My mother was instrumental in making me a pull hitter.
