I'm not really sure what is going on. I'm challenging guys, but the big thing is fighters just aren't getting the ice time this season.

We did a little training in the beginning, ... But again, these guys aren't supposed to be skilled fighters.

It is getting to that point in the year where you have to start playing your best basketball. Not that we have been messing around, but it's time to get serious. We are nine days to the end of the regular season and it is time to put up or shut up and I am challenging these guys to put it up.

The one thing I learned a long time ago is you can't really concern yourself with the guys that aren't here. They're not here, whether you cry about it or not. So you spend all your time and energy with the guys that are here.

These tests have to be more difficult for fighters to pass. A lot of fighters will get rejected, but it will be a good thing.

Oscar De La Hoya (1973-)

This is a good benchmark for our guys. This is only the seventh time we have met and we aren't going to throw the whole thing at them. We are looking for guys to make some strides now.

It's still early in the season. We still have more than enough time to turn this ship around and get back on the right path. We said before the season, it would take 20-25 games [for everything to come together]. I hope it doesn't take that long, but we're getting closer to that number. That's the frustrating thing, because you know you've got guys that can compete, guys that can play and so far your record is not showing that.

I like the format as it is both challenging and creative. It provides us the opportunity to test our competitiveness throughout the weekend and keeps us on our toes. I believe it is taking place at the right time of the season as our guys continue to improve competing at a high level.

The card is shaping up real well. We're taking quality fighters and the local guys on the card are first rate fighters.

These two guys are veteran fighters, ... The good thing is, both of these guys have chins, so it is going to be really good; it's going to be a barnburner.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

My whole point was that there's a time and a place to make hits like that. I'm a firm believer that pre-season isn't the time for those kinds of hits. And both of us are guys that been around, our jobs aren't at stake.

Who can stay together over two months is really a key thing. One thing we do have is solid guys, so when you get smacked and things aren't going good, you can rely on the character of these guys.

I like our depth this season. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. There are some guys who didn't even get off the bench (against FC Dallas) who I could see challenging for a starting spot in June. We got a half-dozen quality guys out of the draft.

With a lot of guys playing out there, the pace was never too slow, and I think that helped the guys stay focused. The only thing that was a little challenging was that they just sanded the greens.
